Idea Gallery: Area Rugs

I've been on the hunt for an area rug for our living room for...um...well...about 2 years now. Talk about indecisive, right?! I can easily select an area rug for a client but when it comes to my own home, well, it's a whole different story. My husband and I live in a large one bedroom apartment, where the main living area is one big open space. We have our dining area / design library (makes for an interesting combo) and then our living room with a giant sectional, coffee table, etc. What's always bothered me is the "sea" of beige apartment of carpet that dominates the entire space, which is where the need for an area rug comes in. Most people only think of using a rug on hard surface flooring, but you can also use over carpet to define the area as its own space. What are your thoughts on area rugs? Do you prefer pattern, texture, solid...please share! P.S. - be sure to see my list of online rug resources below...

My Top Picks for Area Rug Resources (that won't break the bank!)

  2. Yes, it's a tricky one. When I saw your post I thought you might help me decide which rug I should get for my sudio room - I am indecisive too :) Thanks for the links! I tend to like florally rugs but the ones I like are so pricey! We have some amazing Aussie designers making rugs with Designer Rugs I think. Stunning but total budget breakers!

  3. I really love rugs and also have a home where the main living area is one space...and not all that big! I have persian rugs...one that anchors the seating area and one behind one of the sofas that you see as you come down a small flight of stairs. I also have a dhurri rug in the kitchen...just throw it in the washing machine when it needs a clean! Good luck with the hunt.

  5. I love area rugs! I love them on top of carpet or hard flooring. They define space, create rooms within rooms and add warmth. I like to use layers of rugs! Great pictures!

  6. We have a great patio right outside of the french doors in our living room, so I buy a new indoor/outdoor rug from Ballard Designs each year. I have a 9 year old and my husband cooks out there, so there's lots of traffic and these clean like a dream. Plus, I love the more rugged texture in the summer.

  9. I have always been an advocate of using a bold patterned rug to doll up dull carpet...

I guess it does sound odd to folks--a rug on carpet--until they see it.

Good luck shopping; I'll be interested to view the addition to your room!
