Current Project: My Apartment Living Room

I mentioned a couple weeks ago that I decided to do a small make-over on my living room and asked you for some advice on what to do above my sofa. Several of you had some great suggestions and after much deliberation, I decided to go with an over-sized sunburst mirror. After that decision was made, I ordered a chevron rug (a pattern I'm OBSESSED with) and it was just delivered. Now I'm stuck again and desperately need your input! If this were a client or friend's apartment, I'd have it designed in a minute...but since it's my own home, I'm left completely clueless (see this quote to know exactly what I'm talking about). My dilemma? What color scheme should I go with? I have a blue accent wall that I have to work with, which kind of limits the direction I can go. See all the details below and let me know your thoughts! Your input is greatly appreciated.

 1. Over-sized Sunburst Mirror measuring 50"R from here
2. Chevron Wool Rug in Grey from Overstock
3. Existing accent wall color that I have to work with (I've already painted it twice!)
{The coffee table is fairly new and will be staying...it just needs some new accessories}

I had a bunch of fabrics in my design library so I threw them on the sofa to try and get some ideas. All it did was leave me more confused. I really do love the Trina Turk fabric (blue & green print seen in the corner of the sofa), but does it work?

I always gravitate toward blue and green - those are my "go-to" colors that I never tire of. But I'm also loving coral these days and think it pairs nicely with blue and gray. Oh, what to do? Thanks for any advice you have!  I'll keep you posted on my progress. Happy Friday and enjoy your weekend. xoxo - Julie

  3. I'd choose the first colour option. Coral energises the rest and the pattern on the coral pillowcase looks little similiar to that on the rug ( sorry for my english, hope you'll understand what I mean;-))...is this your son sleeping on the sofa? soo cute;-))

    1. Thanks Julia! And yes, that's my little sweetheart napping on the sofa while I was throwing fabrics all around him! My cat Jada (to the right) was laying on top of them.

Hello! Such a cute picture of your little baby sleeping! If I may give my opinion, I think color combination #1: coral, teal, charcoal looks beautiful, and maybe adding some shiny/golden metallic accessories... Happy makeover!

  5. I like both color schemes. Tough call. I have the same rug but blue. That sunburst will be incredible!

  6. I am currently redoing my terrace (aka basement) level and so far have goldish-taupe walls and charcoal built-ins and doors. I am thinking of adding a teal-like color as a "pop color" - looks like you may be close to this color-combination!

  7. I looked at the fabrics before I read the post and was immediately drawn to the same fabric you was!! LOVE the combination. I'm one of those weird people (or maybe not so weird-i dunno)who have a Spring&Summer decor and a Autumn&winter decor. I change them out.....I LOVE the colors you like for a S&S combination tho.

  9. HA! Before I scrolled down, I was thinking of something like your color scheme option #1. Though I might do a bolder orange than coral (maybe closer to tangerine tango) for the accent pop. No matter what you choose, it will be fantastic - like your designs always are!! :)

  12. Love the rug. My two cents is that I love both color combos but I am drawn to the first one, since I am really liking coral lately as well.

  17. I love the rug and the coffee table, they add character to the space! I would go for bright coral, bright green or mustard yellow. I think any of those look good with the blue on your wall and grey. Looking forward to seeing the result!

  19. oh, my gosh. i didn't even notice the little guy sleeping on the couch until i read one of the comments and went back to look at the photo. so precious.

i am having a difficult time choosing between either color combo. i like them both. i think i might have to go with the second if someone forced me, though. i LOVE that sunburst mirror! i just got a gorgeous one for above my sofa a couple months ago... from hobby lobby of all places. it looks very high-end and expensive, but it was actually only $200! i adore sunburst mirrors and could never get sick of that design trend.

i'm sure whatever you do will turn out beautifully. your apartment looks lovely.

  20. Since you've already got some gray /black going in the rug, I think your coral, teal gray idea works best..Use the coral as your color "pop" and teal for more of the textiles...I personally like the fabric closest to the cat..The tea/beige combo pulls together the walls and the couch. You could add another pillow in a similar pattern using gray then a pop of coral perhaps in a silk? Just brainstorming...Also, don't forget your wall art..That's another great way to tie together a color scheme.
