Eclectic Interiors :: Getting it Right

There are so many factors that go into designing a successful space - scale, finish, texture, color, pattern - all of which depend heavily on the design style that you're working with (modern, traditional, vintage...). I think one of the most challenging design styles to pull off is eclectic. The goal is to create a space that mixes different time periods, styles, sizes and patterns, without it looking hodge-podge or chaotic. Not an easy thing to do, especially when you're combining so many different looks. I've been really trying to push myself to design my projects with more of an eclectic twist since I tend to keep things more streamlined and simple (which sometimes results in kind of boring). I really, really want to makeover our apartment, as we just renewed our lease for another year. My goal is to really step outside my comfort zone and be more bold in the choices I make, going for an eclectic chic look. To get motivated and inspired I found several amazing rooms that pull of the eclectic style beautifully! I hope you find a little inspiration too and please share any tips or tricks you have up your sleeve on designing with this style.

  2. I think eclectic make a home feel more like a "home"
In all the pictures yo posted there is a mixture of things, but the colors are all in the same family. Pic 1: blue chairs, chandelier, stool. Black paint curtains and rug trim.
Pic 2: blue chandelier, matting, glasses and chair. White walls, other chairs and napkins.
Pic 3: gold table, yellow chair. red fabric on chairs crossed by red painting. blue trim on sofa, vase, chair, chandelier, and lamp
pic 4: gold table, old frame, gold ottomans
...and so on and so on....
so to me, the basic rules are still being followed, they just have a little twist. Enjoy another year in the apt!!

  6. Thanks Julie for including me in this post--I just discovered it! I agree with Elizabeth, to keep an eclectic mix from getting too chaotic there needs to be a unifying element such as color. Contrast creates tension in a space and too much of it can feel a little crazy. I love a good mix of textures--in fabrics and furnishings-- to really give a space interest.
