What's Your Sofa Style?

There are endless possibilities when it comes to sofa styles. The basic style of a sofa comes down to 3 things: the cushions, arms and whether it has a skirt or legs. Aside from the frame of the sofa, there are endless possibilities on what type of fabric to use: a print or solid? Chenille, silk, linen, leather, etc? And what about the color? Something neutral, colorful, bold? Seriously, how does one decide?! I rounded up a variety of sofa styles - modern, traditional, slipcovered, armless, tufted; ones with details such as nail head trim, a skirt, fringe. What style are you drawn to? I tend to lean toward sofas that have more of a modern, clean silhouette, in a neutral fabric. My theory is that by going with a solid neutral for the upholstery, it allows you to ad pops of color and pattern with accent pillows, which you can change out from time to time for a quick update. That being said, I do love seeing a large print such as a stripe or geometric, but haven't had the courage to try it for myself or a client yet! What are your thoughts on sofa styles? What are you most drawn to?

Have a great weekend! Anything exciting happening? Meet you back here next week :) xoxo - Julie

  1. I love this post. I just purchased my first sofa so I'm extra enthusiastic about sofa styles! I'm definitely more drawn to a clean contemporary look. The one i just bought is completely white with silver nail heads and a sleek, elegant shape. It is similar to the fourth photo. I'm just so worried the first thing I'm going to do is spill something on it - eek!

    Have a wonderful weekend,

  2. Gorgeous images! I spend a lot of time on my sofa, so it MUST be comfy. I add decorative pillows when I have company coming over, but when it's just family, we need to be comfortable.
    Happy Friday!

  3. Great photos! I have the same philosophy as you- but somehow my couch ended up having a (very subtle!) herringbone pattern to it. :)

  4. This one is on it's way to me as we speak (thesofaco.com for custom sofas), I selected a warm grey chenille fabric with modern chrome base. http://www.thesofaco.com/custom-furniture/Sofas/Karlye.aspx

  5. I completely agree with you. I prefer a neutral solid so that I can bring in color with pillows. As you said, it allows for an easy change.

  6. Beautiful photos. I love neo baroque inspiration and my favourite company ever is Sige Gold. Do you know it?

  7. I have learned to always go neutral so you can change the decor easily with new pillows. Unless your wealthy and you can buy a new sofa, when ever! Love this post. Great pictures and love the zebra pillows.

  8. I love over stuffed couches with lots of cushions. I've got a great big over stuffed buttery yellow couch right now, and I love it.

  9. I'm with you on the whole neutral sofa thing...I love changing out colorful pillows! But that fab striped sofa above is rocking some pretty cool pillows! I'd LOVE to have that somewhere in my home! Super crazy, but the colors are so fun!

  10. The English roll-arm in natural linen that we waited 14 weeks for finally arrived and I've dreamed about this sofa for years. It's the most comfortable sofa I've ever sat in and while I love the linen, I'm going to whip up a white slipcover for it to switch things up. :)

  12. love that pale blue sofa! seems difficult to have with a 2 year old but maybe one day... also, appreciate the striped sofa. nice to see a pattern on a sofa besides a floral.

  13. I agree with you, I do like more neutral colors so you can easily change color in your room through pillows and accessories. For a larger sofa I prefer 3 cushions so if a third person sits on there they won't sink in the middle if there are only 2 cushions.

  14. I agree! Natural colors make your room ready for using colors i think.
I love the post. Especially picture nr 4. with natural colors. Such room would make me relax and enjoy all the little details of the accessories. :)

  15. Please consider advising. I have a grey/white kitchen. years ago purchased a Louis XV Walnut French Renaissance Buffet. My color eye needs to paint it white. Would this damage the value of the piece? Do I go with what is needed for the room?
