On the Hunt for: An Upholstered Ottoman / Table

So yesterday I accidentally kicked the wobbly, loose leg on our coffee table, which resulted in the whole leg falling off and the table crashing down on the floor. It's a heavy table with a teak wood top and heavy metal base...luckily our 6 month old son or two cats weren't underneath it! My husband flipped out at the thought of something happening to our son, so the table is off to find a new home (Craig's List!). Now it's actually kind of nice not having a table - it's like a big playground for Luke. But eventually, we're going to need something and now I'm thinking a large upholstered ottoman would be perfect. Maybe even one that doubles as storage. I'd love to have one custom made (someday, when we actually have the extra money!), so I went on a search for different styles for ideas...would I want it tufted, in a solid fabric, patterned fabric, leather? Do any of you have an ottoman that doubles as a table? What works for you in your living room?

 {A super chunky fully upholstered ottoman - no base or legs}

{Love the wooden base on this one for books, magazines, etc.}

{This one if fun with a tufted top and scalloped design on the base with nailheads}

{I can opt for a fun striped or printed fabric like this one}

{Love the simplicity of this ottoman with a more traditional leg}

{Perhaps I should keep it super simple with a solid fabric (NOT white!) with a contrasting welt?}

{Or I could go with animal print like this amazing zebra hide!}

{Another tufted style with nailhead trim on the base}

{I like how this one looks more like a coffee table with an upholstered border and tufted inset}

{A chunky tufted ottoman in a fun pattern - love the low base}

{I love the thick painted legs and the fabric print with an over-sized welt on this one!}

  1. If I had to choose, I'd like the second one, It's always good to have some more storage space, but I don't like the idea in the living room because of it's surface- I don't know if I would lay a glass of water on it. I don't recomend any furniture upholsterted in leather- it usually doesn't work with cats.

    1. Good point! I'd probably put a large tray on top to set glasses, food on, but it still wouldn't be quite the same as having a real table!

  2. I think my fave is the one in zebra hide and the two tufted ones after that. I agree with Julia that tufted or fabric ottomans are not the best option as a coffee table UNLESS ofcourse you have a sidetable to put your liquids etc. when you are having a snack or a glass of something. An ottoman does look so much more stylish though than an actual table.

  3. I've been on the lookout for one for years.. I'd rather not custom order one as they tend to be as expensive as a chair.. I'm hoping to find a great ones somewhere someday:)

  6. I have such a soft spot for trays on soft ottomans! I think that is where my tray collection stemmed from. Now I just need an upholstered ottoman!

  7. I would love a tufted ottoman, all the options here were quite big so I ended up getting a rustic coffee table but once day I will get a tufted one!

  9. I have a large upholstered ottoman similar to the 4th one down, I love it. I used to use it as a table but it has migrated to the large window area and has become a perch for my dog to look out the window, she is a big dog and works perfectly. I cover it with throw blankets for her. She has a favorite print for blankets, leopard!

  10. I don't have one, but as a thought or suggestion you may want to check a large chain furniture supplier for an affordable option you will often see them in a leather to match an obtrusive leather sectional and consider having it reupholstered to your own liking??? I may consider this for a client I am currently working with. Another option would be taking a wood table to an upholsterer and having it "converted". I believe I saw this on littlegreennotebook if I'm not mistaken. PS, I love the first image with the totally tufted low blue ottoman. Wow.

    XOXO,

    1. Great ideas Whitney! I honestly never thought of having an inexpensive one re-upholstered or having one made to fit an actual table as the base....love it!

  11. I love the third one (apricot coloured with scallop detail). The zebra print one is also high up on my list? How about this one? http://www.furniture-collection.co.uk/furniture-blog/who-wouldnt-love-this-irish-estate-stool/

  12. Tufted ottomans are beautiful but my kids (2 boys/ 1 black lab) somehow managed to bury goodies in all the nooks and crannies. I now have an upholstered bench from Home Goods that is used as a launching pad for the couch. So, I've had to replace the l brackets that keep it together. All that said, I would get something like the second ottoman w/o tufting and sturdy legs. :) Good luck!

  13. We now have an 18 month, but when we bought our new family room sofa and ottomans, we opted for pretty basic ottomans. It is so nice not worrying about him hitting his head all the time etc... I never thought about the tufting issue as Emily pointed out. I think you'll be so happy with an ottoman over a coffee table when your little one starts crawling, walking and attempting to jump off the sofa. :)
