New Client Project: Color Scheme Inspiration

I was just hired by a fabulous couple in their thirties to help design their brand new house, which I'm super excited about! They want a look that's fresh, modern and comfortable with a touch of glam, but weren't quite sure what color direction to go so I created two very different color schemes to choose from. The first being one of my favorite color palettes of all time - indigo mixed with shades of blue and apple green, gray and crisp white. The second scheme is a palette that is on trend right now, with shades of aubergine, fuchsia, gray and crisp white. My clients chose board #2, which I haven't done before so it'll be a fun challenge. This year I'm really going to try and share more of the projects I'm working on, including the ones around my house. I'll be sure to keep you updated on the progress of this project as we go along! If you had to choose between these design concepts, which would you go with? I'm torn...(Be sure to click on each board to see an enlarged view).

Olioboard Holiday Blog Hop & Moodboard Challenge

Today I'm taking a break from my Guest Blogger Holiday Gift Pick series (which will resume tomorrow) to share the exciting design challenge I was asked to participate in from Olioboard. Olioboard is a great website that allows you to create your very own interior design moodboards using their extensive library of products and images, or you can upload your own. It's kind of a simplified version of Photoshop and the sky's the limit on what you can create! I was asked along with a handful of other bloggers to join in on the fun and create a moodboard centered around a decorating concept for the holiday season. Here's what I came up with...

For those of you who know me, you know I love color and strive to design "outside of the box", which is why I decided to stray from the traditional red and green Christmas color combo and go for something bold and edgy. I centered my moodboard around the colors fuchsia, black, silver and white. Definitely NOT what most people associate with Christmas decor, but as you can see from the items I pulled together, it can definitely be done tastefully. A few helpful tips on achieving this look:

* Try keeping a neutral backdrop with gray, silver and white. Layer in pops of color with accessories and ornaments to keep things from getting too busy and bright.

* A little bit of fuchsia goes a long way, so use it sparingly (I chose to incorporate a pink tree and flowers as the primary pink accents for this design).

* Instead of placing an arrangement of flowers in a vase, float single blooms in stemless wine glasses for a modern and sophisticated twist.

* To keep the overall look festive, be sure to incorporate shiny silver accents into the decor.

* And finally, have FUN while decorating for Christmas! Try new things, be open to fresh ideas and don't stress over any of it!

A New Approach to an Old Trend by Erika Brechtel

I'm so excited to have Erika Brechtel, owner of Small Shop [a brand styling studio] and the fabulous blog Shop Talk, as today's guest blogger! Erika is an incredibly talented graphic designer with a keen eye for all things fabulous and beautiful, especially when it comes to interior design and fashion. I've had the privilege of getting to know Erika over the last year and am happy to be introducing her to you today! So without further adieu, take it away Erika...

Thrilled that Julie asked me to guest post for her, especially so since she was such a big influence on me and support for me in starting up my own blog. So to honor that, I wanted to do a post dedicated to her love of the chevron!

Okay so it's been around for a while, and you may even worry that we've seen the last of it. But I beg to differ! I have been so pleased to see an assortment of reinterpretations and reinventions of our zig-zag-y friend. Take a look at the reimagined products and inspiration shots I've collected
as Exhibit A:

small shop: chevron reinterpreted, classic
small shop: chevron reinterpreted, colors

small shop: chevron reinterpreted, neutrals

Exhibit B: Missoni -- the company that made famous the zig zag -- has been around since 1953! That's over 50 years of popularity, and a posh one at that. So fear not, my fellow chevron-lovers; it's here to stay.

Modern Office Inspired by Cover of Vogue

You can find design and color inspiration in just about everything...fashion, travel, nature, people...especially when you're feeling really creative. Yesterday I came across Gisele Bundchen's February 2011 Vogue China cover, where she's wearing a fabulous ensemble from Prada's spring 2011 collection. The vibrant colors and mix of bold stripes immediately inspired me to create a new design board and color scheme for a modern, feminine and chic office. Here's how I pulled the look together...

The Inspiration: Gisele Bundchen's February 2011 Vogue China cover
Creating the Color Palette: Using Photoshop (a designer's best friend!), I pulled each color from her outfit to get a better sense of palette I'd be working with.

Creating the Design Concept: The bold stripes, contrasting colors and slightly ruffled neckline of the Prada ensemble came across to me as tailored and a bit preppy, yet chic, casual and feminine. I wanted to office I designed to have the same overall look and feel. I'm pretty pleased with the result and wouldn't mind moving right in to this bright, cheerful office myself! What are your thoughts?!

SOURCES & DESIGN NOTES: Nautical Rivierra Wing Chair via Room Service! (LOVE this chair!); Ceylon Table Lamp (great for adding a pop of sunshine to your workspace!); Pranafication high gloss laminate art (this whimsical piece breaks up the geometric patterns and ties the color scheme together); Jonathan Adler Channing Desk (sleek, modern and 100% chic!); Jonathan Adler Walnut Claude Etegeire Set; Chevron Black Rug; Palm Springs Block Print Pillow in Pink by Trina TurkSmall Regal Urn in Green (which would look great displayed on the etegeire with books and accessories!).

Fashion Inspired Design Concept: Summer Chic

You never know what will inspire a new color scheme or design concept. It can be anything from a piece of art, gorgeous jewelry, a fabric swatch, or even a lovely dress. I came across the Crochet Watercolor Floral Dress by Bluemarine (below) and it instantly inspired me to create a new design concept. The soft colorful pattern looks like a watercolor painting and the details of the turquoise beaded belt and crocheted neckline add a touch of texture and style. The final look: Summer Chic - feminine, relaxed with a touch of sophistication. What inspires you?! Please share!

Bliss Living Home Trend Boards

Bliss Living Home has such gorgeous trend boards! Each board represents their latest collection for each season. One of my favorite things to do when beginning a new project is create a design concept / inspiration board. As you can see in these examples, you can use any object, photograph, textile swatch, etc. to create a board that shows off the overall look and feel for your vision. Do you ever create trend / inspiration boards...for design, fashion, or anything else? What inspires you when beginning a new project (whether it be personal or professional)?

Modern Chic Online Design Concept

Did everyone have a nice LONG weekend? I sure did :) Spent time with my family, went to a BBQ with good friends and finally got my husband to put together the IKEA bookcase I bought weeks ago for my design library (I'll post pics when it's finished!). Anyway, I just completed an online design package for a client and wanted to share with you the end result. My client and her husband just moved in to a new house and all they've done so far is paint the walls. They were in need of some inspiration and direction to before purchasing furniture, accessories, etc. so they purchased my online studio concept & color scheme package. I really had fun with this particular project because my client loves Jonathan Adler, west elm and the colors blue, green and grey! Here's a sneak peak of how it turned out!

Finding Inspiration

I'm on week four from officially being laid off and I've hit a wall...up until now I've been super motivated to get my business off the ground and have been working day and night putting it all together, planning, obsessing, designing, etc...but today woke up feeling overwhelmed and uninspired. I'm starting to go a little stir crazy in my apartment and kind of miss all my girls back at the office (which no longer exists - went out of business). So, to put a little wind back into my sails, I created a design inspiration board for a future project.
This is how begin creating a design concept. It usually starts with a "lead" fabric - something with a pattern and at least two colors. From there, I decide which direction to take the design and begin pulling in other elements, magazine tears, paint chips, etc.
The lead fabric I used to inspire this concept was from Scalamandre. I mixed in a subtle blue fabric, a white linen and a textured neutral. I kept the paint colors soft and neutral and to add some interest, threw in a natural seagrass wallcovering (maybe for a ceiling, trimmed with white crown moulding?).
Beautiful dining room concept. Comfortable, relaxed and cheerful.

Master bedroom concept - fresh, soothing and relaxing - the ultimate retreat.

Chandelier and accent mirrors to use either in the dining room or bedroom.

What inspires you? Whether you're an interior designer or just in the creative field in general...how do you begin a project? Please share your thoughts, ideas, comments, etc.!

Design Vignette: Inspired by Art...

I was inspired to design a room around this piece of poster art, English Rose. Sometimes all it takes is a fabric, photo, piece of art or accessory to start the wheels turning in my head! There are so many things that can inspire a beautiful space. If you don't know where to begin and feel overwhelmed when you're trying to design a room, look around you - there's plenty of inspiration!

I created a feminine, whimsical room with a hint of sass. By selecting pieces with soft, curved lines, I kept with the femininity of the art however, the bold contrast between colors adds some drama and keeps the overall feel fresh and fun. From the top: Lisse Sofa by Baker Furniture (a pretty penny for this one!); Liberace Mirrored Table by Arteriors Home; Ethan White Pillow by Blissliving Home; Sofitel Glass Lamp by Arteriors Home; Set of 3 Dutchess White Poodles by Arteriors Home; Monroe Glass Black Vase; Nickel Plate Multi Bulls Eye Mirror by Global Views.
What inspires you? What have you used in the past to inspire new and creative designs?
